Biography

 

Tim de Klerk is a full time Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, specialising in cataract surgery as well as lens and laser refractive surgery. He is the Clinical Lead for Cataract Services at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and the clinician in charge of the Hospital’s dedicated cataract surgery unit at its satellite site located at Withington Community Hospital.

Tim finished his medical degree in 2001 and began his basic specialist training in ophthalmology at the Sunderland Eye Infirmary in 2005. He moved to the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2009 for his higher specialist training. In the final years of his specialisation he did advanced specialist training in cornea, ocular surface and refractive surgery under the supervision of Mr Arun Brahma.

As the lead consultant for cataract surgery at the hospital, Tim has the task of dealing with the most complex cataract operations on a weekly basis. He has a number of dedicated cataract lists and is responsible for training half a dozen trainee specialists in cataract surgery at any one time. In addition, Tim has a dedicated corneal and ocular surface clinic once a week at the Eye Hospital where he deals with patients with complex corneal disease.

Tim is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist (London), a member of the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons and on the Specialist Register with the GMC. He has numerous peer reviewed scientific publications and has presented his research work internationally at meetings in both the United States and Australia.
